Blue Beauty - Tricker Water Lily Hybrid

'Blue Beauty' is our most popular water lily and in high demand. [See and read about Blue Beauty displayed in our Tricker catalogs from the 1930s, Click Here] This special hybrid developed by our founder William Tricker in 1896 under the original name 'Nymphaea pulcherrima' which was botanical Latin for "beautiful water lily", a very appropriate name for such a beautiful blue flowered water lily! The blossoms are blue, have a spicy fragrance, and stand six to eight inches above the water surface. Leaves are dark green slightly speckled with brown above and beneath. Margins are wavy with lobes long and tapering. In spite of its potential size, the water lily does well in tub gardens or small pools. Without a doubt it stands out as one of the most desired and popular water lilies of all time and continues to be admired by all.

Astraea Tropical Water Lily

Astraea Tropical Water Lily

Astraea is an old time favorite water lily here at Tricker’s nursery! The name Astraea is found in Greek mythology and translated as “star maiden”. Astraea and her mother were both personifications of justice and she was considered the last of the immortals to live with humans. She fled from wickedness of humanity and ascended to heaven and became the constellation Virgo and the scales of justice she carried became the nearby constellation Libra.

Astraea is a cross between two select water lily hybrids: N. gracilis and N. zanzibariensis hybrids. The pads are a deep green above and tinged purple beneath. The blossoms are a very attractive blue and are star shaped. The petals are blue shading to white at the base. Stamens are an attractive yellow against the blue petals. The blue flowers are held high above the water level and can be seen at a distant! We are sure you will be pleased with such a wonderful water lily!

Blue Gigantea - Tropical Water Lily

Blue Gigantea - Tropical Water Lily

One of our favorite tropical water lilies that was introduced into the United States in the 1800s. The species is native to Australia. It is considered the "queen of the water lilies". It has one of the longest enduring blossoms, which is open on five to seven successive days from eight to nine a.m. until twilight. The blossoms, sky blue in color, sometimes have a diameter of 12 inches. The blossoms are held on strong stalks. Because the stalks are so large and have many air channels, they were once used by the aborigines when forced to take to the water to escape from enemies. The supply is limited so order early to reserve yours. The plant typically establishes in Tricker's nursery in the later Spring and is sent at that time. Once established in your water garden it will become characteristically spectacular.
