Natural ponds have a profusion of flags, rushes, reeds and small flowering plants which delight the eye. Your pool will be more attractive and much more naturalistic when planted with clumps of these ornamental plants. There are hardy and tropical plants, each having their own desirable traits.

The true aquatic Lobelia cardinalis or "Cardinal Flower" so often mistaken by the multitude of generic "Cardinal Flowers". One of the best shallow true water plants for the water garden. This is the "true" Cardinal Flower that is found in meadows and along stream banks in nature. It has one of the deepest red colorations in the flower of the hardies. Should be planted close to the water so reflections of its glorious fiery red color, so rare in hardy plants, will be mirrored in the depths below. Rainbow Water Celery is a most unusual aquatic plant. A wonderful and colorful plant that produces serrated leaves of cream, green and pink. In the summer the plant produces white carrot flower umbels. It will grow to about six inches tall but at times can reach to about 12 inches. Water Hawthorn(Aponogeton distachyus). A most admirable plant that is known for its long blooming characteristics, and has been known in some locations to be still blooming at Christmas. With dark green strap-like leaves, about a foot long often mottled with brown or purple blotches and white contrasting coal black stamens, make this one of the loveliest of all water plants. They emit a strong fragrance resembling a wild hawthorn, hence the name. If you want an aquatic with fragrant flowers water hawthorne is a must! The plant will be the first to begin blooming in the Spring, in any Summer warm water may will show signs of dormancy and in the Fall produces a wonderful amount of aromatic blooms well into the winter months as ice begins to form on the pond. William Tricker selected an image of this wonderful plant in his 1897 Book "The Water Garden". His selection has adorned water gardens for decades to come!
