Eldorado - Tropical Water Lily
Eldorado - Tropical Water Lily

Eldorado. Produced by hybridizer Martin Randig of California. Eldorado is Spanish for the "golden one" and this water lily fits the description. The Spanish Conquistadors sought Eldorado, the Lost City of Gold that has been an ellusive legend but not this water lily. Blossoms are large, lemon yellow and fragrant. Leaves are green, oval shaped, and mottled. Some refer to this water lily being a "hardy tropical" in that is one of the most hardy of the yellow varieties.

St Louis - Tropical Water Lily
St Louis - Tropical Water Lily

St. Louis. This water lily was the first patented water lily in 1933 introduced by George Pring, hybridizer of the Missouri Botanical Garden. It was also the first tropical water lily that was awarded the Henry Shaw Gold Medal at the National Flower Show. The blossoms are large star shaped, brilliant yellow with deeper yellow stamens. Leaves are oval-round, pea green above heavily mottled with bronze and more pale underneath.

Yellow Dazzler. Produced by water lily hybridzer Martin Randig of California in 1938. It opens out flat as a dish showing the yellow petals in abundance. Blossoms are a "dazzling" yellow, leaves a rich green.

Aviator Pring - Tropical Water Lily
Aviator Pring - Tropical Water Lily

Aviator Pring. George Pring, one of the most famous water lily hybridizers of the Missouri Botanical Gardens, introduced this hybrid in 1956 and named this lily after his aviator son who was killed in World War II. Flowers are deep yellow, cup shaped, and rise high out of the water. Leaves are green, toothed along the edges, and wavy.
