August Koch - Tropical Water Lily

August Koch - Tropical Water Lily

August Koch. George Pring, famous hybridizer of the Missouri Botancial Garden, named this hybrid after the chief florist August Koch of the Chicago Park System who discovered the seeds in 1922. When introduced, the description said that the blossoms are lavender blue and deliciously fragrant! This water lily is especially popular and often used as cut flowers for indoor enjoyment. (read our book 1101 Water Garden Questions and Answers by Richard Lee that shows how to keep water lily flowers open for display). Stamens are an attractive reddish yellow, sepals are liliac. It is viviparous and extremely excellent for small pools and one of the few water lilies that do well in comparatively little sun.
