Home | Tropical Shallow Water and Bog Plants
Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) is the famous Egyptian paper plant. The stalks are triangular and attain a height of 5 to 8 feet. At the top is a tuft of long thread-like leaves which gives the plant a most novel appearance. Shallow water and rich soil spell the best combination for this plant, but it also does well in ground kept slightly moist. It has been suggested that this very species of papyrus was at one time abhorred by the crocodile and this led to the construction of the cradle of the infant Moses. Good as a tall background plant for pools and ponds.
