Trickers Has a VERY Interesting History
|

William Tricker (1852-1916) was an originator of commercial water lily culture in the United States. He began experimenting in the later 1800s growing and hybridizing water lilies. He tried to improve the shape, colors and hardiness of these wonderful plants. In the early 1890s he made a reputation as a specialist and leading grower of aquatic plants creating desirable Water Lily hybrids and established a commercial water lily company. In 1892 the first William Tricker Company mail order catalog was introduced. |

| By 1927 the business was expanded and incorporated as William Tricker, Inc. in Ohio and would not only become well known for aquatic plants, but also raised fancy goldfish and tropical fish through Tricker's hatcheries. Tricker's chemical engineers not only introduced aquatic fertilizer formulations, but introduced newly invented aquarium supplies and fish disease remedies. The current location, with aquatic greenhouses, fish hatcheries and outside growing ponds, has served the water gardeing industry since the turn of the 19th century and represents a piece of history in water lily culture with the involvement of other water lily pioneers and specialists who worked over the years at William Tricker, Inc.®: Albert Buskirk, Robert Sawyer, W.G. O'Brien, Dr. John T. Charleson, John Doscher and Gil Lambacher to mention a few. The water garden industry was introduced to many spectacular and unique water lily hybrids that were named by these noted individuals and are still available today. Some are unique and "first of a kind" in their respective classes and can be purchased from William Tricker, Inc.® today! You can still enjoy these spectacular water lily hybrids and witness the beauty they saw so long ago when we had time to ponder nature's miracles! Since the early 1900s the William Tricker company continued to make many advances in the aquarium industry. Wrought Iron aquariums with slate bottoms were popular in the 1920s and were manufactured here in Independence, Ohio. Many new varieties of aquarium fish were imported from Germany and sold throughout the United States and were used to breed new varieties at our hatchery. Along with the aquatic plants, Tricker's continues to raise and produce some of the finest fancy goldfish in the country and has become a recognized name in the industry of water gardening. |
