Botanical Name: Nymphaea 'Bagdad'
The wisteria star-shaped blue flowers of the 'Bagdad' tropical water lily are broad and flat with yellow stamens and petioles that are long enough to stand beautifully above the floating leaves. It's leaves are medium size, light green on top and is mottled with red, brown, and dark green beneath with purple stripes. It's a viviparous water lily that forms plantlets attached to the mother plant.
In 1941, George Pring described this wonderful lily as "The combination of leaf and flower gives a rich effect, something like that of a Persian rug".
The 'Bagdad' propagates well. It is grown best in medium and large water gardens ans is slightly more cold tolerant than other tropical water lilies.
Without a doubt this water lily is one of the better blue-flowered water lilies.
Hybridized By: George Pring about 1941. Many botanists have said that the Bagdad is one of the best achievements of George Pring.

William Tricker (born 1853) started his commercial water lily culture in the United States in the late 1800's when he started hybridizing water lilies and studied what helps their growth. The shape, colors and hardiness of his beautiful aquatic plants have withstood the test of time.
In the early 1890's, he earned a reputation as a leader in aquatic lifeforms from hybridiing many water lilies. His water lily nursery and company, in both Ohio and Pennsylvania, was passed down tthrough his family until the 1980's when Richard Lee purchased the Ohio company. In 1892, the first William Tricker mail-order catalog was mailed to customers across the nation, and we still do, today.
