Mrs. Edwards Whitaker. George Pring, famous hybridizer form the Missouri Botancial Gardens, introduced this beautiful hybrid in 1917. In September 1920 George Pring was given the gold metal by the National Association of Gardeners for creation of this new water lily. Flowers are lavender blue becoming pale with age until they are almost white. Blossoms are often 10 inches or more, stamens bright yellow, petals numerous and paper thin, and there is a decided fragrance. When documenting this wonderful new hybrid, Mr. Pring reported that during flower production this water lily will produce at least 6 open flowers per plant! But, soon afterward the water lily became most popular and was producing much more flowers! Not only this water lily will produce a great numbers of flowers but the flowers are known to be one of the best for early blooming in the day and staying open later in the evening than other varieties. Leaves are almost round, mottled or streaked with dark red above and blotched with purple on the pale green base below. The plants do best in large pools but may be grown in a tub. In the words of the famous Tricker hybridizer Robert Sawyer that had a photograph of this distinct water lily in his book with the caption "Whitaker is a gigantic light blue water lily that opens early and closes late. It is one of the best Tropicals."

In the 1920s and 1930s, William Tricker delivered aquatics locally with trucks to customers. This practice is still done today.

William Tricker (born 1853) started his commercial water lily culture in the United States in the late 1800's when he started hybridizing water lilies and studied what helps their growth. The shape, colors and hardiness of his beautiful aquatic plants have withstood the test of time.

In the early 1890's, he earned a reputation as a leader in aquatic lifeforms from hybridiing many water lilies. His water lily nursery and company, in both Ohio and Pennsylvania, was passed down tthrough his family until the 1980's when Richard Lee purchased the Ohio company. In 1892, the first William Tricker mail-order catalog was mailed to customers across the nation, and we still do, today.
